Question and suggestion - linking and "Link to existing fragment" button
Reported by Greg Osimowicz | February 6th, 2013 @ 06:45 PM
Hello,
I only found piggy DB yesterday - I'm playing with it and I really like the concept and the approach to building knowledge (and letting knowledge surface by itself) the software takes.
Problem:
I'm struggling with establishing connections between fragments
though. I have input over a 100 bits of knowledge. If I now want to
link things together, I find it is really difficult to do this.
There is no easy way to find and link 2 fragments that are not
tagged with the same term and weren't created one after
another.
As far as I can see the only way to link 2 fragments is by either filtering by a particular tag or displaying all the fragments on one long page by zooming out (to only show the fragments title) and then dragging and dropping fragments onto each other. The problem is this is very time consuming and confusing with a larger number of fragments.
-
If I don't know the tag of a given fragment i have to find it through search - but then I can't link it to anything else as the second fragment I want to link the first one to is not present in the search result so i can't drop one onto another.
-
If I try to link through the "all fragments view" (if i zoom out to see a list of fragments) I need to first locate the first fragment, grab it, then be dragging it around searching for the second fragment... with a long list of fragments this becomes tiresome very quickly. I am used to the ease of use of linking in Personal Brain or even ConnectedText and the linking process in PiggyDb is a show stopper for me unfortunately.
Proposed solution:
How about if next to the "Create new fragment" green plus button,
there was another one that said "Link to existing fragment". Upon
selecting it a text field would show up into which i would type in
the name of an existing fragment and it would be automatically
found through auto-complete. This is pretty standard stuff in most
wiki implementations when creating new links to existing
elements.
Hope the above makes sense.

Hi Greg,
You can create links to "Selected Fragments" by dropping a pointer to it, so combining it with Keyword Search could partially solve the problem you pointed out. But I know that is not the best solution. I'll keep this ticket for future improvement. Thank you for your feedback.
