IDEA: Webclipping features

Reported by John John | August 21st, 2011 @ 05:56 PM

I would love to have piggydb completely handle web clipping for me. It could store partial or complete web pages through a bookmarklet. With piggydb being a personal knowledge base / notebook it seems to fit naturally. On the piggydb about page you even mention articles and excerpts specifically :)

I don't know of any local/self-hosted web-based web clipping type products. Noteworthy web clippers to me are- memonic, evernote, canaware netnotes, surfulater, ultrarecall. There is very much a need, imo, for a (free, open-source,) flexible, web-based, web clipper. Piggydb has all the right foundations :D

For a basic implementation:
A browser bookmarklet pops up what is basically an 'add fragment' dialogue, pre-populated with the current selection, and/or the full stripped down page content.

For a more complete web clipping feature set, you could look at memonic which I think is very cool.

I've been using QuickFox Notes, a Firefox extension, on a split screen with Piggydb. Splitting the browser screen between the two tabs via the extension Tile Tabs. QFN uses bookmarklets for storage as you describe, but keeps clips open for edits and appends in a standalone window or a Firefox tab. It's intended for clipping of text fragments with URL. For capturing of complete formatted pages into a brower-based hierarchy, try the Firefox extension Zotero, designed for reference management.

Clipping directly into Piggydb is not a bad idea, but I'm sure that such clips would land as new fragments in Piggydb's database, rather than as bookmarklets. While this might sometimes save me a step, I think we're better off using tools such as QFN and Zotero that specialize in spontaneous clip capture and management, and then pasting our clips into Piggydb fragments at our leisure.

    Hi John John, Jerome,

Thank you both for the idea and info about webclipping.

I love using tumblr. It's so easy to post links or quotes from the Web with its bookmarklet. I've been thinking about adding a bookmarklet to create a fragment for a URL bookmark or quote. This kind of fragment would work as a reference to a resource on the Web rather than a complete clip.
