Accessibility issues

Hello,

Please consider accessibility issues in Piggydb development. For example, adding keyboard navigation will allow users with visual impairments to use Piggydb without needing to mouse over elements, and will also be appreciated by power users who prefer to navigate with keyboard shortcuts.

As you can imagine, representing information hierarchy and relationships in a non-visual way is extremely challenging. I think Piggydb might be a great tool for this, if it were possible for more users to interact with it effectively.

Here are a couple of good places to start:

  • The WAVE accessibility tool will check any web page and give you tips on how to make it accessible: http://wave.webaim.org/

  • The Screen Reader Simulator extension for Firefox will let you hear what a web page sounds like when read by a screen reader.

Edit: Apologies. The Screen Reader Simulator will not read aloud, but will display text in the order in which a screen reader would read it. There are several Firefox extensions that will either speak or display text in this manner.

    Hi Lisa,

    Thank you for your feedback.

    I've had similar requests before, but then I realized that it was not easy to support accessibility by modifying the current user interface because it had been not designed that way in the first place. Also I couldn't afford the time because I was the only developer of Piggydb.

    Now, I've been developing Piggydb's API which is going to be the main feature of the next major version 7. With the API, anyone can create their own interface to Piggydb. I think it would be better to create a non-visual UI from scratch with the API.
